This experimental horror anthology ran for 18 issues between 1987 and 1989, spearheaded by Del Close and John Ostrander, with artwork by a rotating cast including Donald Simpson, David Lloyd, William Messner-Loebs, and others. Wasteland combined black comedy, surrealism, and psychological terror in short, self-contained stories that pushed the boundaries of mainstream comics. Inspired in part by Close’s background in improv and counterculture, the series tackled taboo themes with biting wit and narrative innovation. A bold and unfiltered outlier in DC’s late-’80s lineup.
